Step by Step Guide to Control Large Patch on your Golf Course

Turf disease - Large Patch

Causal Agent:

Rhizoctonia solani

Susceptible Turfgrass:

Kikuyu, Zoysiagrass, Seashore paspalum

Large Patch is a widely spread disease on Kikuyu fairways, Kikuyu sports fields & Kikuyu lawns in South Africa. This disease infects the roots and slowly works its way up the plant. It can take months before symptoms are visible on the playing surface. This disease is spread by dead or alive plant material so best to apply a systemic fungicide like Headway Maxx prior to any cultural practices.

Spray tees and previously infected fairways to prevent a spring full of untreated and spreading large patch.

Preventative rate per ha – 1 Application

1,4L Banner Maxx + 250g Heritage

Curative rate per ha – Follow up 21 days later

2L Banner Maxx + 372g Heritage

The great news is you can tank mix Pennant magnum with the large patch mix to prevent poa annua and unwanted weeds and grasses germinating.

Add 1L / ha to the tank to prevent poa annua germinating.

Poa typically germinates in April & August. Best to apply early March & mid April then again early July and follow up mid August.

Application Timing:

  • Autumn with a follow up application 21 days later

  • Headway Maxx at 2-3 litres/ha is very effective

  • A spring application of Headway Maxx is also recommended

Integrated Turf Management Tips:

  • Key treatment time in Autumn (NB) and Spring (less NB) 2-3 litres/ha Headway Maxx

  • Do a follow up application 21 days later in Autumn

  • Best to spike prior to applying Headway Maxx and water in immediately for a few minutes

  • It is not how much water, but how quickly you water in that is important

  • Preventative rate: 2 litres/ha

  • Curative rate: 3 litres/ha and repeat 21 days later. Water in immediately. Best to tank mix with 100 ml/ha Complement Super or 5-20 litres/ha Qualibra
