Causal pathogen: Clarireedia jacksonii

Susceptible turf species:

  • Major host – Seashore paspalum
  • Minor host – Zoysia grass, Bermudagrass

Favorable Condition:

  • Warm, humid weather and cool nights that produce heavy dew (15-30ºC)
  • More than 10 hours of leaf wetness for several days is favorable for disease development
  • Disease is severe on turf subjected to drought stress and low fertility, especially N
Dollar Spot
Dollar spot attacks turf at multiple levels, creating sunken patches across the lawn and hourglass lesions on individual grass blades.
Dollar Spot Control: Effective Management Strategies

Dollar spot is a common and persistent fungal disease that affects turfgrass, particularly on golf courses. Implementing a comprehensive management approach combining cultural practices and targeted fungicide applications is crucial for effective control.

  • Maintain adequate to high N fertility when disease is active
  • Manage thatch levels through scarification, aeration, and top dressing
  • Reduce dew on turf canopy with irrigation, mowing, or hose dragging
  • Minimize surface wetness
  • Avoid night watering; irrigate early morning/early afternoon
  • Maintain adequate air movement through selective tree removal and use fans if practical
  • Prevention is better than cure
  • Chemical control:
    • Pydiflumetofen (Posterity)
    • Penthiopyrad (Velista)
    • Chlorothalonil (Daconil WeatherStik)
    • Propiconazole
    • Difenoconazole
    • Fludioxonil
    • Thiophanate-methyl
  • Rotate the fungicide use to manage and prevent resistance build-up
