Seashore Paspalum

Paspalum vaginatum
Turf Weed

Description

A warm-season perennial grass that produces rhizomes and spreads rapidly by stolons. The vegetative propagules (rhizomes and stolons) are much thicker than those of bermudagrass. It is highly salt tolerant, tolerant to wet soils, and prolonged cloudy conditions. The salinity tolerance of seashore paspalum is much greater than any other members of the Gramineae family. It is best adapted in coastal areas of the tropics and sub-tropics around the world and is most often used as a grass for golf courses in areas impacted by salt or where irrigation with brackish water is necessary.

Appearance

Paspalum is a perennial summer growing grass with short rhizomes. It has quite prominent seed heads which are often considerably higher than the foliage and produce many black, sometimes sticky seeds.

Key Details

It is a major weed of turf, particularly in the sub tropical regions.
